New vs. Recycled Pallets: How to Choose

Published February 4, 2026

One of the most common questions we get is also one of the simplest to answer once you know what to look for: should you buy new pallets or recycled ones? For most businesses, the honest answer is “it depends on the job” — and buying the wrong one either wastes money or risks your product.

Here’s how to think it through.

What you’re actually comparing

  • New pallets are built from fresh-cut lumber to a single, repeatable specification. Every unit has consistent dimensions, a clean appearance, and a predictable load rating.
  • Recycled pallets are reclaimed, sorted, inspected, and repaired back to a sound, dependable standard. A quality recycled pallet does the same job as a new one for a fraction of the cost.

Recycled pallets are usually graded — commonly #1 (premium, minimal repairs) and #2 (sound, repaired) — so you can match the grade to the job instead of overpaying.

When new pallets are worth it

Choose new when consistency and appearance matter:

  • Automated handling — conveyors, wrappers, and automated storage systems reject out-of-tolerance pallets, so the uniformity of new stock pays off.
  • Customer-facing or retail shipments — the pallet reflects on your brand when it arrives at a store or customer dock.
  • High-value or fragile product — when you need a guaranteed, documented load rating.
  • Exports — new pallets paired with heat treatment for ISPM-15 compliance.

When recycled pallets are the smart buy

Choose recycled when price and volume lead:

  • High-volume domestic shipping — the savings per pallet add up fast across a lot of loads.
  • Internal/warehouse use — moving product around your own facility doesn’t require pristine pallets.
  • Standard sizes — the 48×40 GMA footprint is the most abundant recycled size, so availability and pricing are best there.

The sustainability angle

Recycled pallets also keep usable wood out of the waste stream. Reusing and repairing a pallet several times over its life is one of the quieter wins in a supply chain’s environmental footprint — and it happens to save money at the same time.

The bottom line

Don’t default to new out of habit, and don’t default to recycled just to cut the invoice. Match the pallet to the job: new where consistency and appearance earn their premium, recycled where price and volume win.
